Name: Miles Rivas
Age: 17
Gender: Male
Race: Witch
Height: 5'7"
Eye Color: Dishwater brown
Hair Color: Brown-black
Hair Style: About shoulder length, shaggy and messy as all get-out. It's uneven, and looks something like he cut it with a weedwhacker. His bangs are as sporadic as the rest of his hair, and get longer in the middle of his forehead and at the sides of his face.
Clothing: Usually tight, flashy-colored, and a little ways out of the norm. He usually dislikes any sort of sleeve and thick fabrics, and baggy pants irritate him. His lip is pierced- A neon green ring is the norm. Very often, he can be caught wearing a brown leather collar- The leather looks kind of beaten up, and the single tag that hangs from it reads 'Jinx', hand-carved into the metal by the looks of it.
Build: Pretty built, but in more of a lean, subtle sort of way than a showy sort of way. He's in good shape, knows it, and packs a decent punch.
Personality: Miles is unfailingly, painfully..Blunt. About everything, and to everyone, all the time. If he thinks something, he says it. As far as he's concerned, doing otherwise is ridiculous, whether it's to spare someone's feelings, to be 'respectful', to 'be polite'. Because of this, a lot of people write him off as being rude, unfriendly.. But in the long run, he's usually not. He's just really straightforward. In the same way, he refuses to lie in any sort of situation, and tolerates liars less than he tolerates the sort of person that censors everything they say. He's typically very stubborn, very confident, and fairly cocky. On the rare occasion he does become embarassed, or is unsure, he tends to lash out at the nearest possible target. He goes very strongly off of first impressions of people, and if he decides he doesn't like someone, that's not likely to change, come hell or high water. His bitch-switch is fairly wide and easy to flip on average, but with people he dislikes, it's safe to say it's always 'on'. And it's not exactly that he totally fails at subtlety..He's just..Very, very bad at it. Because of all this, he can be a very, very difficult person to deal with. But on the flip side, his blunt-and-honest approach to life also means he's very open- He'll gladly tell just about anyone what he's thinking or how he's feeling if they ask, and has no qualms with showing affection. If he doesn't decide he dislikes you, he's usually a genuinely friendly sort of person, and is fond of getting close to people. He's fiercely protective of those he really cares about, and will put their best interests above his own nine times out of ten. He doesn't waste any time overthinking any sort of situation, having a knack for condensing any problem or decision down to its simplest level, and, though he often chooses not to act like it, he's actually very intelligent, so he's quite the problem-solver. He's laughing about something more often than not, and hates to dwell on serious or depressing things.
History: Miles comes from a long line of witches that have a knack of situating themselves into important or exclusive positions. His own parents settled into an area of very low, almost nonexistant paranormal activity, and, as far as he believes to this day, were the only witches in a very large area encompassing his hometown. The lack of any sort of 'competition', if that's how you'd think about it, got his family into the habit of thinking of themselves as very, very important. It only furthered their pride that, competition or no, most of their bloodline did boast a hefty amount of power. They carried themselves with a sense of royalty, and had very high expectations for their children. Their first son was born powerful, strong-willed, and very aware of just how important he was. He conducted himself as a prince. Their second son was born, and he was just as confident..But a whole lot less regal. The difference between Miles and his older brother were apparent from a very young age. As he grew older, his personality fell further and further from the mold, and if that wasn't enough, a great flaw in him became apparent- His witching abilities were..Scarce, to put it very lightly. He could manage simple tasks only with an amount of effort, and his mother and father were horrified. They told each other, time would go on, and it would get better..But it never really did. It took a lot of time for them to get out of the mindset of their child being disabled, and a lot of time to get used to the idea that he was going to act how he did, and that they weren't going to change it. But eventually, they did accept it. Pompous was one thing, but cold was another entirely, and while they may have been the former, deep down, they weren't the latter. And almost as soon as they accepted Miles, they were rewarded with a surprise- Their second son might be virtually powerless on his own, but he had a definite, natural ability to borrow power from those around him. He was just as thrilled by this as they, and took delight in his ability. But then, when Miles was a few days shy of his sixteenth birthday, a huge 'it' happened. He ended up powerfully cursed, and walked away at the end of one day without speech, or hands, his conciousness crammed down into the form of a cat. His brother witnessed the occasion, though how much he never could be sure, and passed it on to his family that Miles was dead. On the rare occasion he goes into the details of his curse, he'll give out only that much information, no more on the conditions of the actual event or of his leaving. For whatever secret reason it was, he just..Left, wandered away and let his family believe what they would. He ran into a few that would try to lift his curse, but for whatever reason it never did work, and was never a pleasant experience to sit through. He did regain his form occasionally, though, and finally came to the conclusion that how often he got his human shape was directly proportionate to the amount of paranormal activity around him. He drew up a loose conclusion that maybe his borrowing ability drew off of his surroundings, and gave him enough juice to take his own form back for short periods of time. That idea led him to Cheshire, for its mass amount of magic and 'nightlife', entirely possessionless and more than a little lost.
Important Notes:
-Miles spends most of his time in the shape of a black housecat. He can never keep clothes with him in that form, so the collar is the only thing that stays, and when he finds himself walking on two legs again, he's wearing just about as much as his cat-self was prior to the change. His lip ring is the only exception- He has yet to figure out where it goes or why it comes back, but he has found out that if he remains as a cat too long, when it reappears it bleeds, like maybe it had started to close up again.
-His knack for 'borrowing' the magic of others is never anything permanent, and is very rarely in large amounts. Suffice to say, he gets a momentary boost, while the one he borrows from gets a momentary low in power. The stronger the person, though, the harder it is for him to 'borrow' from them, he's discovered. When he's in his cat form, he can't really do such, but seems to pick up a low, steady stream of power from his surroundings. If he's around enough magical activity, he can throw the curse off and it becomes dormant for a little while, though the change is always involuntary. Other magic in his cat form is rare and very low-key.
